Passive Speakers

Passive speakers need a separate stereo amp to drive them. Pick a bookshelf or floorstanding pair by room and budget, then match an amp – from compact entry level to reference hi-end (Sonus faber, Revival, KEF, LEAK…).

What is a passive speaker?

Passive speakers have no amp in the cabinet. You connect speaker cable to an integrated amp, power amp, or receiver. Unlike active speakers: Passive is flexible for upgrading the amp / source; Active is simpler when you want fewer boxes.

What do you need to listen?

Minimum: a source (streamer, DAC, CD, turntable) + an amp stable into the speaker impedance + a passive speaker pair. Bookshelf models usually need stands; towers sit on the floor. Larger rooms or deeper bass can add a separate sub.

FAQ

How do passive speakers differ from active?

Passive needs an external amp. Active has the amp in the speaker – connect a source and play. Passive is flexible for amp upgrades; Active sets up faster.

How many watts do I need?

Check sensitivity and impedance on each model. Many 86-89 dB bookshelf speakers run well from ~30-50 W continuous; 4 Ω speakers (ATALANTE 5, many Sonus faber) need an amp that is stable into 4 Ω more than a headline watt number.

Do bookshelf speakers need stands?

Yes, preferably. Correct height (tweeter at seated ear level) and solid stands improve imaging and reduce vibration. Some lines (Revival Stand 3) are sold separately.

Do passive speakers have Bluetooth / Wi-Fi?

No. Streaming sits in the integrated amp, streamer, or DAC. Passive speakers only take an amplified signal over speaker cable.

Where to buy authentic passive speakers?

District M is an authorized retailer with amp-matching advice by room. Hotline 0976 792 922 or Zalo.
